Bigbury and Burgh Island in South Devon hold a very special place in the hearts of Chris and me because we went there on our honeymoon. On one hot day recently we decided to pay another visit and take our friend, Roland (who is over from Australia), with us. The beach was packed with holiday-makers but the tide was coming in as we arrived and we had to wade across the last twenty metres or so to reach Burgh Island, which only becomes an island when the tide comes in. The beach is an isthmus, therefore the sea laps at its shoreline on both sides.
Chris, Roland and I had lunch at the Pilchard Inn and, before taking a walk on the cliff-top, we watched the beach begin to disappear. We had to take the famous tall tractor back to the mainland but, as you can see from the photo’s, some intrepid people preferred to hike up their clothes and wade through…
Lovely!
Nice pics. Just like Aust…….. Mmmm close. You will have to come over again. We are planning a big America trip in 2 years for about 4 weeks. You are welcome to stay while we are gone. Probably from this time of the year though. Don’t want to be over there in bad weather and get stuck inside all the time. Cheers
I may have been exaggerating a little but I can tell you on that particular day it was as hot as Brisbane in the summer (around 30 -32 degrees) and the beach was packed (by English standards). I’m afraid your comment doesn’t say who you are so I’m wondering if I know you, and I’m wondering also where you live? Oh, how tempting to be offered 4 weeks in Oz – thank you so much! I can understand you wanting to go to America around this time of year but, of course, this is the best time to be in England too – as you can imagine, the cold months that are the ones I prefer to avoid. Now if it was a terrible English summer that year… You’re very kind. Thanks again (whoever you are!).
